Changing Master Slides (Google Slides): Why you should do this and how it helps you

 Changing Master Slides (Google Slides)

Why you should do this and how it helps you

🎉It's finally 2021, but we are still living in the crazy virtual world from 2020. Tech tips are back and hopefully still helpful and relevant to you teaching in person/hybrid/virtual.

Google Slides is involved with this tip and if I'd known about this when I was teaching still last year, I could have saved myself SO many steps and so much time when making Google Slides presentation and lessons.

Using the master slides template, you can quickly modify the slides and template theme you have chosen for your presentation. At it's simplest, you don't have to change the font, font size, color, etc. of each slide. The master template does that for you. At it's more advanced, you can create interactive activities for students without the worry of them changing/deleting the background or deleting things needed on the slide for your interactive activity.

💻 Here a just a few things you can do by utilizing master slides template:

  • Change background: You can customize the background for your slides all at once, instead of individually by slide. Modifying the graphics or adding your own images, logos, information, etc. are just a few examples of what you can modify on the background.
  • Rearrange: You can rearrange the location of titles, textboxes, bullet points individually on each slide, which can take some time. However, if you want them in the same place on every slide, simply change their location in the master template and voila, it's changed automatically on each individual slide.
  • Text formatting: If you're like me, you may have a specific font you always like to use within Google (Questrial is my favorite....) and changing it on EVERY slide can be a pain. Just like everything else so far, change it on the master slides template and it automatically updates for each slide. You can also change the text color, size, bold, italicize, underline, etc.
  • Creation: You can also create your own theme in the master slides. Just start with a blank layout and add everything you want in there.
PS.... you may find you want other options in themes provided by Google Slides without creating your own. Go to https://slidesmania.com/ and you will find TONS of templates compatible with PowerPoint & Google Slides that are fun, engaging, and can even help you create your own interactive activity.

💡 Below, you will find a how-to video on changing your master slides.

It's not terribly long, but you will need to set aside about 3 minutes to watch it. I promise, if you use Google Slides all the time you will save tons of time using this tip!
